Dr. Garcia's Research
In addition to teaching at the American College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, Rice University School of Continuing Studies and lecturing to various groups, Dr. Garcia is actively involved in acupuncture research at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She is currently a co-investigator on several studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) both in the US and China. Current studies include:

What you should know about Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are research studies designed to answer specific questions about new therapies, procedures, or treatments. This carefully conducted research helps to determine if the therapy is safe and effective by testing these treatments and/or procedures in people.

In the past, clinical trials were sometimes thought of as a last resort for patients who had tried all other treatment options. This is not true. There are trials for healthy people (for example, to study prevention of disease) and trials for various types and stages of illness / injury.

How do I participate in a Clinical Trial?
Problems with Clinical Trials

People of various ages, ethnic groups, and both genders can participate in clinical trials. Each study, however, has its own set of eligibility criteria (rules for who can and cannot participate).

Participants of clinical trials must have similar characteristics and degree of illness. This is necessary in order to increase the chance they will respond in similar ways to the treatment being studied. The Federal Government requires many protections for people who participate in federally funded clinical trials.

Although clinical trials are an important part of the medical research process, and scientific discoveries can lead to better ways to prevent, detect, and treat medical conditions, results take time and the information obtained from a clinical trial must be interpreted very carefully.

Acupuncture studies are different from clinical trials involving pharmaceuticals, and patients may be inconvenienced...
